Pigmentation spots, commonly found on the face and differing in color from the surrounding skin, are a type of skin pigmentation disorder caused by an increase in melanin. The essence of these spots is melanin. In the basal layer of the skin's epidermis are melanocytes, whose job is to synthesize melanin. Over time, melanin migrates with the cells to the outermost layer of the skin, the stratum corneum, and eventually sheds off. This skin metabolism cycle takes approximately 28 days.
